A research team from the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) and the University of Beira Interior (UBI) has achieved an impressive third place worldwide in the prestigious AG-VPReID 2025 International Competition (Aerial-Ground Person Re-Identification Challenge). The team, comprising Hugo Proença (IT/UBI), Kailash Hambarde (IT/UBI), and Md Rashidunnabi, from UBI, stood out among global competitors in one of the most demanding challenges in video-based person re-identification (ReID).
The AG-VPReID competition evaluates artificial intelligence systems in highly complex and realistic scenarios. Participants are tasked with identifying individuals captured simultaneously by high-altitude drones (80-120 meters) and ground-level surveillance cameras. This dual-view setup introduces extreme variations in perspective, resolution, lighting, occlusion, and movement, making accurate identification a major scientific challenge.
This advanced approach enabled ACP-VPReID to reach a Rank-1 accuracy of 67.72% and a mean accuracy of 69.34%, outperforming several state-of-the-art solutions and reinforcing UBI’s leadership in the field of computer vision.
Beyond the competition, four team-authored scientific papers were accepted for presentation at IJCB 2025, the IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics, held in Osaka, Japan, in September 2025.
