Coimbra hosted the ACM SIGCOMM Conference from September 8 to 10 for the first time in Portugal. Now in its 39th edition, SIGCOMM is one of the most prestigious international forums on computer networks and data communication.

At the event, the Network Applications and Services (NAS) group of the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) of Covilhã (UBI) presented the demo and poster “IoT-Integrated Photodiode Sensor for Efficient Radon Detection”. The work, authored by Seyed Nooreddin Jafari, Rui Pinto, Edgar Ladeira, Lígia Lopes, Sandra Soares, and Bruno Silva, demonstrated a low-power IoT-based system designed for real-time radon gas monitoring, which was calibrated using the Radon Eye RD200.

The project was developed within the RuralTHINGS initiative, highlighting NAS’s focus on applying advanced research to practical societal challenges.

The NAS group conducts cutting-edge research and experimental development across a wide spectrum of areas, including:

  • Applied artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Cloud and fog computing
  • Computer networks, distributed applications, and systems
  • Internet of Things (IoT), microservices, and serverless architectures
  • Mobile computing and software engineering
  • Gamification, reputation systems, and information security by design

By integrating these fields, NAS develops innovative digital solutions that are efficient, secure, and scalable, addressing challenges in communication networks, smart environments, and digital transformation.

Participation in ACM SIGCOMM underscores the NAS group’s capacity to contribute to global scientific discussions while showcasing research with direct real-world applications. From Covilhã, the group is positioning itself as a reference in next-generation networking and applied digital technologies, reinforcing the role of Portuguese research on the international stage.
