Ana Sofia Carmo, our PhD student in Biomedical Engineering, has earned 2nd place in the 3rd Edition of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition at the University of Lisbon.

She stood out among twelve exceptional PhD candidates from the University of Lisbon, showcasing her research with clarity and impact in just three minutes presenting her thesis "Non-Intrusive Fog-Cloud Computing for Epilepsy."

Congratulations to Ana Sofia Carmo on this achievement, and also to Vicente Mayer Garção, who was also a finalist. While Vicente didn’t place this time, he continues to make impressive strides with his innovative "Lampsy" device, designed to detect epilepsy. His project is now advancing toward the startup stage with Lampsy Health and is already being presented to stakeholders and sponsors.

Ana Sofia states: “Being a PhD student can often feel like a solitary path, full of questions, not just about our research, but about its real impact and worth. That’s why opportunities like this are so important. They’re not just a fun challenge, they’re a reminder that what we do does matter."

She considers “Science Communication is just as vital as the science itself. As a few speakers at the final event pointed out, initiatives like this one show that we’re starting to take that seriously, recognizing that science is meant to be shared. And when we open it up to the wider community, everyone benefits."
