Portuguese health technology startup Lampsy Health has raised €230,000 in funding, led by the Ageas Foundation and joined by business angels Susana de Sousa and Ellie Asgari. The investment will help further develop and certify the company’s flagship product: an AI-powered epilepsy detection device discreetly integrated into a lamp.
Founded by our PhD Vicente Garção, Leonor Pereira, and Joana Pinto (co-founder of Clynx Health and IT entrepreneurship manager), Lampsy Health emerged as a spin-off from the Instituto de Telecomunicações and Instituto Superior Técnico. Their innovation is aimed at transforming at-home epilepsy monitoring by using artificial intelligence to detect seizures, particularly during nighttime when supervision is limited.
The device is currently undergoing Class I medical device certification in the EU, a process expected to reach a major milestone by October 2025. While the requirements for Class I certification are relatively moderate, Lampsy is aiming for high clinical validation standards. The company is partnering with several Lisbon hospitals, including Santa Maria, Egas Moniz, São José, D. Estefânia, São Francisco Xavier, and Amadora-Sintra, to test the device on hundreds of patients.
In a press statement, the Ageas Foundation said it sees Lampsy as “a high-impact investment aligned with its strategy to support scalable health and wellness innovations.” Business angels de Sousa and Asgari highlighted the startup’s strong technological foundation and the global relevance of the problem it addresses.
With this funding, Lampsy Health aims to finalize product development, conduct broader patient validation, and complete EU certification. The team is also preparing for a larger funding round, targeting €1 million from domestic and international investors by the end of 2025, with hopes of entering the European market by early 2026.
