The Foundation for Science and Technology has released the provisional results of the evaluation of R&D Units (UID) under the Multiannual Program for Financing R&D Units 2023/2024.

Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) has once again proven its leadership in science and innovation, earning an "Excellent" rating in the 2023/2024 national evaluation of R&D units conducted by FCT.

Out of 313 R&D units evaluated across Portugal, only 43% received the highest "Excellent" rating, underscoring IT continued excellence in scientific and technological research.

This prestigious recognition highlights IT merit, reflected in the exceptional quality of its research team and their significant contributions across a broad range of scientific fields. IT researchers, particularly its integrated members, have garnered international acclaim, with several being ranked among the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists, according to Stanford University. The team’s global impact is further emphasized by the presence of IEEE, OSA, APS, and IET Fellows among its ranks.

FCT evaluation covered a six-year period, analysing scientific and technological activities carried out between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023. It also assessed each unit’s proposed strategy, goals, and organizational plan for 2025–2029. The rigorous process involved more than 315 international experts distributed across 29 panels representing 35 countries.

As IT looks to the future, it remains committed to strengthening its international strategy, enhancing research output and technology transfer, expanding industry collaborations, and promoting interdisciplinary innovation. This recognition is a testament to the dedication, passion, and excellence of the entire IT community: researchers, technical staff, and administrative teams alike.
