On January 22, Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) hosted the FCT Committee for the FCT R&D Units Evaluation 2023/2025.

It was a dynamic and insightful day as FCT evaluators conducted a comprehensive assessment at the Instituto de Telecomunicações seventeen labs (find out more), in Aveiro, exploring cutting-edge advancements in ICT and telecommunications research.

IT has seventeen laboratories distributed throughout its multiple sites and branches, supporting high-intensity experimental research and development. The Technology Readiness Levels are from TRL 3 to TRL 9.

The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale is used to assess the technological maturity of an innovation or technology before its operational implementation. This tool is commonly used in the field of research and development (R&D) to provide a common understanding of a technology’s degree of readiness.

IT is a leading private, non-profit R&D organization recognized as a State Associate Laboratory, and Technology and Innovation Centre (CTI). Established as a partnership among six universities, one polytechnic institute, and two telecom partners, IT drives impactful research and innovation in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

Over 30 years, IT has become a key player in ICT research, participating in nearly 2,500 national and 800 international projects. With a community of approximately 900 researchers, IT fosters higher education and advanced training, having mentored over 3,000 MSc and 600 PhD graduates to date.

IT actively collaborates with academia, industry, and public institutions to generate knowledge that shapes a better future. Its contributions span Communications, Education, Health & Wellbeing, Green Energies, Circular Economy, Mobility & Space, and Public Policy Support.

Through partnerships with government, local authorities, and health and defense services, IT demonstrates its commitment to societal progress and sustainable innovation.
