Susana Sargento has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Martifer, a prominent Portuguese company operating in the metal construction, naval industry, and renewable energy sectors. Our distinguished researcher and professor at the University of Aveiro (UA) will serve a three-year term, overseeing the company's initiatives in digitalization, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence areas where Martifer aims to expand its investments.

Susana Sargento has a successful career spanning academia and industry. She is a Full Professor at UA and coordinates the IT research group Network Architectures and Protocols. She earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UA in 2003 and was a visiting doctoral student at Rice University, USA, in 2000 and 2001. Sargento has taught at the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Porto (2002-2004) and served as a guest professor at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, in 2008/2009, with a sabbatical and faculty exchange extension in 2010/2011.
With nearly 20 years of experience leading technical projects, Sargento initially focused on 4G networks, then 5G networks, and is researching future network technologies. She has authored nearly 500 scientific articles and holds several patents utilized by companies.
In March 2012, she co-founded Veniam, a vehicular networking company that developed a low-cost internet access infrastructure using vehicles as network elements. Veniam was acquired by Nexar in 2022. Also, she won several awards and recognitions, namely the EU-Women Innovation 2016 European competition, the 2020 Femina Prize, recognized by the Ministry of Culture, for "Merit in Science: relevant research, she was a nominee for the 2021 Activa Inspiring Women Award, listed among the top 50 Portuguese companies in the "startup" ecosystem, featured in the United Nations "17 Faces of Action" exhibition, and, so on.
Sargento's appointment to Martifer's Board of Directors underscores her exceptional expertise and leadership in digitalization and emerging technologies, promising to drive significant advancements within the company.
