Adolfo Cartaxo, our researcher and Professor at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, explained to '90 Segundos de Ciência' (Ep. 1677) how he uses artificial intelligence to improve the information transmission capacity of multi-core fibers in fiber optic networks.
Around six years ago, Adolfo Cartaxo's team received a nine-core fiber from the Japanese Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (NICT). From the study of this fiber, models were developed that made it possible to characterize the information transmission capacity of these fibers and identify their problems.
Later, after the acquisition of a 19-core fiber, these models were improved to find solutions to improve the capacity of these fibers.
Currently, artificial intelligence techniques are being used to find these solutions and reduce the level of interference that occurs between cores. This way it will be possible to increase the communication capacity of these fibers and test them in fiber optic networks.
