Portugal was the second country with the most funding approved in Horizonte Europe's European Innovation Council program. National companies raised a record amount of 37.4 million euros, divided between three technological sectors. Three companies will use the financing to complete development and bring technologies to the market that will respond to major industry challenges.

One of the winning companies is PICadvanced, which will receive 17,4 million to complete development and bring to the market a new generation of optoelectronic components for fiber-to-the-home networks, with bandwidth and quality of service that is not yet possible with current technology and with less energy consumption and raw materials.

Founded in 2014, PICadvanced is an IT spin-off co-founded by António Teixeira (Senior IT Researcher), Francisco Rodrigues, and Ana Tavares (former graduate students at IT), specialized in solving complex problems through the development and packaging of optical components based in integrated circuits.

PICadvanced defined the photonic integrated circuits as the key for the innovation and challenge for the telecommunication industry. Currently, PICadvanced is focused on the development of NG-PON2 technologies based on both discrete and integrated optics.
