A total of thirty IT researchers are among the most-cited scientists worldwide, falling within the top 2% in their respective scientific fields.
Stanford University and the publisher Elsevier released this year's update of the list of the top 2% of the most-cited scientists in various disciplines, such as Artificial Intelligence & Image Processing, Optoelectronics & Photonics, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Information and Communications Technologies, Networking & Telecommunications, and Enabling & Strategic Technologies. The study covers 22 major fields, and 176 subfields, and includes more than 200,000 researchers. The data is shown separately for career-long and single-year impacts.

Among them, 790 are closely affiliated with Portuguese higher education and research institutions. The IT's partner institutions included in this rank are Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Aveiro (UA), University of Coimbra (UC), University of Beira Interior (UBI), University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), and the Faculty of Science and Technology at UNL.
Even posthumously, our esteemed researcher José Bioucas-Dias (1960 - 2020) retains his place at the top of worldwide scientific influence. His work has left an indelible mark, as evidenced by this continued recognition. He is one of the most cited scientists in his area in the world six years in a row.
