Técnico's Day QuLab - Quantum Photonics Laboratory DEEC ScientISST Pattern and Image Analysis Group Showcase Science Fair

On the 19th and 20th of May, between 10 am and 5 pm, Instituto Superior Técnico opened the doors of the Alameda campus, in Lisbon, to present the 2nd edition of the Open Day, two days for visitors to discover what is being learned and is researched in the three campuses of the School.

Instituto de Telecomunicações showcased what it does best, the ultimate research developed in TICE, with an emphasis on Telecommunications in the areas of Quantum Technologies (QuLab) and Biomedics Engineering.

The QuLab offered the students a "tour to the admirable world of quantum technologies", and the group Pattern and Image Analysis (IT Lisbon) presented their ongoing Ph.D. and MSc works (ScientISST student team).

QuLab visiting hands-on experience explored the microscopic world of atoms and particles of light and give a glimpse of how quantum technologies may radically change our lives in the years to come.

Pattern and Analysis group (ScientISST) presented some of the student's works related to computer vision and instrumentation for biomedical signals acquisition and knowledge extraction. Demonstrations included privacy-preserving video processing for epileptic seizure detection, a novel smart sock for peripheral physiological data acquisition targeting epileptic seizure detection, facial expression recognition based on standard computer video camera imaging, and Electromyographic (EMG) signal acquisition for veterinary and medical assessment.

This is a two-way experience, the students get in touch with the cutting-edge research projects of IT and the IT researchers receive insights from the students:

It was a valuable experience to showcase our cutting-edge research projects developed at IT to both alumni and pre-university students at the Day of IST's Fair. This event provided us with a remarkable platform to demonstrate the practical applications of our work in the fields of Biomedical Engineering and Telecommunications, while also gaining valuable insights into how younger generations perceive our innovations. The overall experience was enjoyable, and we received very positive feedback from our visitors.

Afonso Ferreira (Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering)

"On the last 20th of May, I had the opportunity to be in Técnico's Open Day where everyone was invited to come and meet the projects developed in Instituto Superior Técnico and talk to students and professors. ScientISST is composed of a group of students and researchers focused on biomedical engineering that is developing projects in Instituto de Telecomunicações. It is great to have this connection between students to feel we are working as a team. It was a pleasure to show some of these projects and answer some doubts about how it is to study at IT - IST and biomedical engineering."

Inês Salema (Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering)

"During Instituto Superior Técnico’s open day event, two groups of high-school students visited the Quantum Photonics Laboratory (QuLab) at Instituto de Telecomunicações. Their enthusiasm was palpable as they explored the lab and learned about our research on quantum technologies. The students had the opportunity of learning how one can use quantum physics to protect data, and how QuLab is working on developing the future quantum internet. In fact, they were so engaged that they didn’t want to leave at the end of the tour! It was truly inspiring to see the next generation of scientists so eager to learn and discover."

Emmanuel Cruzeiro Zambrini (QuLab senior researcher and professor)
