Instituto de Telecomunicações, in partnership with the University of Aveiro, wins first place in the International Space Solar Power Student Competition 2022.
The winning project foresees the construction of a set of satellites that will be placed orbiting the Moon so that they can capture solar energy, store it in batteries and transfer it to a lunar station in order to guarantee the supply of electrical energy.
As part of a collaboration with the European Space Agency, this project already has a first prototype to be built by a team of researchers based in the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (DETI), in the Department of Physics (DFis), in Instituto de Telecomunicações, Institute of Electronic and Telematics Engineering of Aveiro (IEETA) and CICECO - Institute of Materials of Aveiro.
“The objective is to energize a future habitable station to be built on the face of the Moon”, explains Nuno Borges de Carvalho, director of DETI, a specialist in radio frequency systems (wireless energy transmission) and general manager of the project.
Hosted in Paris by the French space agency CNES, IAC 2022 is the one place and time of the year when all global space players come together.
