Information Systems and Technologies AISTI Best PhD Thesis Award

Roberto Magueta, former student and currently a researcher at IT, was distinguished by the Iberian Association for Information Systems and Technologies (AISTI) with the award “Best Iberian Doctoral Thesis in Information Systems and Technologies”.

“It serves as a sign of recognition for work that lasted five years. It was a team effort, but on a personal note, this award goes to show that effort really does lead to success. I've had my struggles with English, but I still managed to deliver my thesis, articles and conference presentations successfully in English”, said Roberto Magueta.

His thesis — “Hybrid precoding and equalizer techniques for mmWave and massive MIMO based wireless systems” — was defended in April 2020 at the University of Aveiro, having been supervised by Adão Silva and Daniel Castanheira (both from IT/UA) and Rui Dinis (IT/FCT-UNL).

It focused on the design of beamforming and nonlinear equalization techniques assuming massive antenna terminals for millimeter wave based systems. To cope with the inherent hardware limitations, his work considered hybrid analog-digital architectures.

“Millimeter wave communication and the use of terminals equipped with a large number of antennas will be two of the key technologies that will enable future wireless communication systems. The combination of these technologies will enable the multi-gigabit speeds necessary to meet services’ quality requirements”, he explained.

Roberto Magueta's doctoral work also resulted in several other scientific publications, both in international conferences and in high-impact journals.

The “Best Iberian PhD Thesis” award distinguishes the best work, developed within the scientific areas of Information Systems and Technologies, with the goal of stimulating scientific innovation and reseach, as well as the dissemination of high-quality scientific work.

AISTI is a non-profit association that aims at promoting and disseminating the work in the scientific domain of information systems and technologies in the Iberian space. The competition received a total of 37 applications (11 from Portugal and 26 from Spain), from which 5 were selected for the final stage.

The award ceremony will take place in a solemn session at CISTI'2021 - 16th Iberian Conference on Information Systems and Technologies, to be held in Chaves, Portugal, from 23-26 June 2021.
