“I am very fortunate to be welcomed in such an illustrious academic family, and for the academic and scientific recognition that comes with this distinct honor, especially in Physics” said Rui Perdigão.
“As with the launch of my institute and other international distinctions, the esteemed members of the Academy, the most brilliant and open minds, have once again had the vision and insight to appreciate my highly non-linear path, as well as the new area of Physics that I sowed and have been nurturing over the last few years, inside and outside the university environment”, the researcher added.
Rui Perdigão pioneered new paths in interdisciplinary physics of complex coevolutionary systems, including fundamental advances in nonlinear science to face urgent challenges faced by society and the environment.
He is currently chair professor in Physics of Complex Systems and Climate Dynamics, interuniversity chair in Fluid Dynamical Systems, executive and professorial chair of the Meteoceanics Institute for Complex System Science (MICSS) and director of the associated Doctoral School.
At the same time, he coordinates large-scale international programs and research networks, and serves on the editorial board of international scientific journals such as Earth System Dynamics of the European Geosciences Union.
Rui Perdigão will now join, among others, Mário Figueiredo and Carlos Salema, who is also a full member and President of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences for the period 2019-2021.
With more than 200 years of history, the academy is one of the oldest, most pretigious Portuguese scientific institutions of continuous existence. It is dedicated to the advancement of sciences and learning, with the goal of promoting academic progress and prosperity in Portugal.
