A team from SIC Notícias was recently in IT in Aveiro to know more about the project FUTPON, a cover story that was later broadcasted on the show Imagens de Marca, on July 19.
FUTPON was a P2020 project, which by pursuing a strategic partnership between IT and Altice Labs, resulted in an added step in a long-term successful path between the two partners. The project consolidated the leadership of Altice Labs in Passive Optical Networks (PON), envisioning the PON of the future. The FUTPON team has developed very small chips that may be soon integrated in Altice´s home devices, making them capable of integrating various technologies and thus facilitating the sharing and transfer of data through optical fiber.
This ambitious project, led by Cláudio Rodrigues from Altice Labs, involved the participation of a talented team of researchers and engineers. In IT, 17 people, worked under the technical management of António Teixeira and, even considering the limitations of industrial property, attained an extensive publication record: 38 publications, both in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings, some of them top-ranked in the field of optics communications.
Meanwhile, FUTPON has given rise to new joint projects between IT and Altice Labs that are already underway.
Finally, José Carlos Pedro, the President of the Management Board of IT in Aveiro, also gave a brief tour of the facilities, explaining IT´s mission of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge in the field of information, communication and electronic technologies.
