IT researchers win the CMU Portugal inRes entrepreneurial program

Carlos Ribeiro and Eduardo Castaneda, both researchers from the Mobile Networks group of IT in Aveiro, were one of the winning teams of Carnegie Mellon Portugal inRes program, short for "Entrepreneurship in Residence".
The inRes program is a very early stage acceleration program for Portuguese entrepreneurial teams building new business ventures based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). inRes provided a training period in Portugal, followed by a seven-week structured immersion period in the USA, anchored at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) campuses in Pittsburgh and Silicon Valley.
The IT researchers identified a need in the unmanned/autonomous ground and aerial vehicles (UAV/UGV). The professional UAV/UGV products resort mainly to WiFi-based wireless links to have real-time communication with the remote vehicles. WiFi falls short to meet several of their requirements, namely high-mobility, range and interference avoidance. Exploring the needs of this market, Carlos and Eduardo built a business model for a start-up to design advanced wireless links targeted at the professional UAV/UGV segments. The wireless links are tailored to meet these customer's needs and push the boundaries of what is currently available on the market to enable new real-time data-hungry applications requiring tens of Mbps. The inRes immersion period in USA enabled the researchers to validate the market need and get an in-depth knowledge of the US customer's requirements.
The Closing Session of 2016 inRes took place on December 6th at Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade do Porto. Here, the inRes participants had the chance to make the final presentation of their initiatives to the Portuguese entrepreneurial community.
