“Application of Estimation Techniques to the TekOn sensors” is the work behind the award.

Bresimar is an automation company located in Aveiro and the “Concurso de Ideias da Bresimar Automação” aims at rewarding innovative ideas with strong potential to reach the market.

This initiative targets university students and has national scope. The author(s) of the selected project(s) are offered the chance to do an internship at Bresimar and develop the proposed product(s) with full support from the company R&D resources.

The starting point of the awarded work was the TekOn sensors, a commercial series of wireless temperature sensors developed by the company TekOn Electronics (http://www.tekonelectronics.com/). In many cases the monitored temperatures change slowly over time, and evolve in a consistent and predictable way. This observation can be used to reduce the average frequency at which sensors report the temperature to the sink, thus saving bandwidth and energy. In order to achieve this, similar estimators were placed on the sensors and sink nodes. Whenever a sensor node senses the temperature, it also evaluates the temperature estimation at the sink node, communicating the observed value only if a relevant discrepancy occurs. In the latter case the sensor sends past samples to update the state of the sink estimator.
