The project “Intelligent Stream Management for Security Applications” (IstreamS), co-supervised by Prof Paulo Pedreiras (IT-Aveiro) and Prof Luis Almeida (IT-Porto), and developed by the MSc students Tiago Silva (FEUP) and Renato Lopes (DETI/UA), was the winner of the OPEN MIND ESEGUR award. This Portuguese award aims at recognising and rewardingg an academic project that stands out in the scope of innovation in the security area.
Instituto de Telecomunicações had a remarkable performance in this award. About 50 different works, from 17 different Portuguese higher education institutions, have been submitted. Among the 20 semi-finalists, six were supervised by IT researchers. Five works were selected to the finals, three of which supervised by IT researchers.
The winner project, IstreamS, is an innovative video-surveillance architecture that has as major goals the reduction of installation, maintenance and operational costs, as well as a reduction of human errors. To distinctive feature of this architecture is the use of a middleware able to allocate resources dynamically and in real-time. This middleware, supported by a flexible real-time network and intelligent nodes, allows sending only the relevant information to the places where it is actually needed, with a suitable QoS. Resources are reserved on demand, respecting strict timeliness requirements. The middleware is able to react automatically to events generated on the environment under surveillance, allocating the required resources and triggering user alarms, when necessary.
