Pedro A. Amado Assunção received the Licenciado (1988) and Masters (1990) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal and the Ph.D degree (1998) from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. In 2020 he received the title of Agregado (Habilitation) from the University of Lisbon - IST. He is currently Coordinator Professor at Polytechnic of Leiria and Senior Researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). His research work comprises diverse contributions in the area of processing and coding of audiovisual information, particularly addressing video coding, transcoding, multiple description and scalable coding, methods and architectures for robust video communications, scalable processing of visual information based on attention models, machine learning methods for omnidirectional video coding, medical image processing and lossless coding of medical images and light fields.
He was member of the programme committee in several international conferences and was involved in the organization of more than two dozen international scientific events, including conferences, workshops and international meetings. He was the Chair of EU COST Action IC1105 3D-ConTourNet. He acted as reviewer of more than seven hundred scientific articles submitted to international journals and conferences and gave more than thirty invited talks. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) and he is the head of the IT Multimedia Signal Processing-Leiria group.
