Nelson Muga (NMuga) graduated in Physics from the University of Porto, Portugal, in 2002, and obtained a Master's degree in Applied Physics, in 2006, from the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He earned his PhD in Physical Engineering from Aveiro University for his research on polarization effects in fiber-optic communication systems. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, NMuga joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações as a postdoctoral researcher. He continued researching coherent optical fiber communications, from 2012 to 2017. Since 2016, he has served as a lecturer at the Physics Department of the University of Aveiro, teaching courses that cover optics, optoelectronics and photonics. Currently, NMuga works as a researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Aveiro. Throughout his career, he has taken part in 30+ R&D research projects, 6 of which were international, and 4 of which were directly supported by the industry. His area of specialization lies in high-speed optical communication systems and quantum secure optical communications.

His primary research interests encompass optical quantum cryptography, coherent optical systems, and digital signal processing. He has a track record of publishing 50+ articles scientific journals, 80+ international conference proceedings, 1 book and 5 book chapters.

NMuga is a Senior Member of the Optical Society - OSA.
