Bio

Nelson Muga (NMuga) graduated in Physics by the University of Porto, Portugal, in 2002, and received the master's degree in Applied Physics, in 2006, by the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He received his Ph.D in Physical Engineering at Aveiro University for research on polarization effects in fiber-optic communication systems. After receiving his Ph.D. degree, NMuga joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações as a posdoctoral fellow, where he continued his research in coherent optical fiber communications, from 2012 to 2017. He has been a lecturer at the Physics Department of the University of Aveiro since 2016, where he teaches courses related to optics, optoelectronics and photonics. Currently, NMuga is a senior researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Aveiro, where, over the years, he has participated as a researcher in 13+ R&D research projects (4 directly supported by the industry), developing expertise in the field of high-speed optical communication systems and quantum secure optical communications.

His current main research interests include coherent optical systems, all-optical and digital signal processing, advanced modulation formats, and quantum communications. He has a track record of 30+ papers published in international journals, 40+ international conference proceedings, and more than 275 citations (source: SCOPUS). NMuga is a Member of the Optical Society - OSA.
