Instituto de Telecomunica??es was one of the first research organizations in Portugal to start research in quantum technologies, namely in the theory of quantum information security and processing, as well as in the experimental implementation of quantum telecommunications. The Group aims at developing novel quantum technologies, for telecommunications, information processing and sensing, over the next decade. As examples of the Group activity, in cooperation with other groups from IT, new techniques and technologies were developed to explore the quantum nature of light to improve the functionalities and capacity of optical communication systems. Quantum cryptographic protocols for secret key distribution and to support secure multiparty computation have already been implemented in the IT laboratories.
