The Mobile Networks Group conducts both fundamental and applied research in the field of wireless communications, with the objective of fostering technological advancement at national and international levels. In parallel, the group plays a central role in the education and training of highly skilled researchers and engineers, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and innovation to industry partners, network operators, and the wider research community.
Research activities primarily focus on the development, analysis, and hardware implementation of advanced signal processing techniques for wireless communication systems. Over the years, the group has made significant contributions to several generations of mobile networks, ranging from early 3G systems to state-of-the-art 5G technologies. Building on this solid background, its current research efforts are devoted to the design of innovative signal processing solutions for future 6G systems, addressing emerging performance and reliability requirements.
In particular, the Group investigates advanced beamforming techniques and waveform design for integrated sensing and communication systems, as well as signal processing schemes for millimeter-wave and massive MIMO technologies. The group also explores novel network architectures, including cell-free systems and radio strip deployments, aiming to improve coverage, scalability, and energy efficiency. Additional research topics include efficient solutions for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, cooperative and distributed transmission strategies, and intelligent resource management.
Throughout its history, the Group has actively participated and coordinated numerous European and national research projects targeting the evolution of wireless systems, such as EU FUTON, EU CODIV, and MASSIVE 5G etc. Currently, the group is coordinating the EU 6GMUSICAL project, which focuses on the development of integrated sensing and communication technologies for next-generation 6G networks.
