Scope of activities

ADVANCING NEXT-GENERATION ANTENNA SYSTEMS, WAVE PROPAGATION, METAMATERIALS, and NANOPHOTONICS

The Antennas and Propagation Group in Lisbon conducts leading research across microwave and millimeter‑wave antennas, radio‑wave propagation modelling, metamaterials, and nanophotonics. Our work bridges fundamental scientific exploration with high‑impact engineering solutions.

RESEARCH FOCUS

We address challenges across short‑, medium‑, and long‑term technology horizons, with applications in:

» NewSpace communication systems

» Next‑generation mobile and wireless networks

» Environmental monitoring and remote sensing

» Biomedical sensing and imaging

CURRENT RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

» Low‑mass, low‑profile, low‑cost antennas for broadband satellite‑on‑the‑move

» CubeSat antenna systems progressing toward TRL 9

» THz reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for 6G

» Low‑profile super‑resolution techniques for microwave imaging

» Microwave radar for breast cancer screening and staging

» Radar‑based detection of floating plastic litter in oceans

» Novel concepts enabling non‑reciprocity in photonic materials for advanced THz isolators, circulators, and photonic devices

FACILITIES & COLLABOTATION

Our activities are supported by state‑of‑the‑art laboratories, including antenna measurement ranges from 1 GHz to 110 GHz and in‑house advanced prototyping capabilities.

The group hosts a dynamic community of MSc and PhD researchers and maintains a strong international network through joint publications, collaborative projects, and staff and student exchanges.
