Instituto de Telecomunicações will once again welcome school students for a series "Ciência Viva Laboratórios Abertos 2026: Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias". Designed to inspire future scientists and engineers, these free programs provide participants with direct exposure to cutting-edge research, laboratory activities, and emerging technologies.
Taking place in Covilhã and Lisbon, the internships target students from the 9th to the 12th grade and offer a unique opportunity to experience the world of scientific research and technological innovation within one of Portugal’s leading research institutions.
Initiation to Electronics and 5G Communications (IEC-5G)
Scheduled from 29 June to 3 July 2026 in Covilhã and Castelo Branco, the Initiation to Electronics and 5G Communications (IEC-5G) internship introduces students to the fundamentals of electronics, mobile communications, and wireless networks.
Over 30 hours of activities, participants will engage in conceptual sessions, laboratory experiments, and visits to research facilities. Students will assemble electronic kits, learn basic printed circuit board manufacturing techniques, and perform measurements related to power, data rates, and other key parameters of 5G networks.
The program also provides practical experience with point-to-multipoint wireless links and explores some of the most important technological and research challenges shaping the future of communications, including small-cell networks, satellite-based systems, Open RAN architectures, network splitting functionalities, spatial processing, and massive MIMO technologies.
Introduction to Telecommunications (INTELE)
Running from 6 to 10 July 2026 in Lisbon, the Introduction to Telecommunications (INTELE) internship offers students an engaging introduction to the technologies that enable modern communications.
The 30-hour program combines group presentations, laboratory visits, and experimental activities. Participants will build FM radio receiver kits, visit the Faraday Museum, and explore the unique environment of an anechoic chamber.
Students will also gain practical experience in printed circuit board manufacturing and testing, component soldering, and circuit validation. Due to high demand, this internship is already fully booked.
Introduction to Biosignals (INBIO)
Taking place from 29 June to 3 July 2026 in Lisbon, the Introduction to Biosignals (INBIO) internship introduces students to biosignals, biomedical instrumentation, and telecommunications.
Participants will assemble biosignal acquisition kits, experiment with biomedical sensors, and learn about the technologies used to monitor and analyze physiological data. The internship combines laboratory work with presentations covering topics such as biomedical engineering, systems physiology, signals and systems, biomedical instrumentation, artificial intelligence, network communications, mobile communications, video coding and analysis, and quantum technologies.
Students will also learn printed circuit board fabrication and testing techniques, manufacture selected components, solder electronic kits, and evaluate their final systems. This internship is also fully booked.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators
Through these internships, the Institute of Telecommunications aims to promote scientific literacy, stimulate interest in STEM fields, and provide students with a first-hand experience of research and innovation. By interacting with researchers and exploring advanced laboratories, participants gain valuable insights into future academic and professional opportunities in engineering, technology, and science.

Hosted at Instituto Superior Técnico from July 27-30, ELLIS Doctoral Symposium (EDS) 2026 invites PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and related fields to join four days of scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking.
Centered on the theme “Trustworthy AI”, the symposium will bring together researchers and experts from across Europe to discuss the future of reliable, safe, explainable, and human-centered artificial intelligence. The program includes keynote talks, poster sessions, industry interactions, and social events designed to foster collaboration and give visibility to emerging research in AI and machine learning.
EDS 2026 is an excellent opportunity for young researchers to present their work, connect with the international AI community, and engage with some of the latest developments shaping the field.
