The digital transformation of businesses is increasingly under the spotlight, driving fundamental mindset shifts and significantly boosting operational efficiency. Powered by rapid technological innovation and evolving consumer expectations, this transformation is now essential for organizations aiming to remain competitive in today’s dynamic market landscape.
In this context, what are the key impacts of digital technologies on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)? How can organizations create greater value in a rapidly evolving digital environment? These and other relevant questions will be explored through a series of three “Industry 4.0” Tech MeetUps hosted by the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) in Aveiro, taking place in April, May, and June.
Second Session - Mobile Communications in Industrial Environment | May 28, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
This second session will be led by Daniel Corujo, Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Informatics (DETI), and researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações. As a key figure within the Telecommunications and Networking Group (ATNoG), he has been at the forefront of innovation in advanced communication networks, including 5G, 6G, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs), and Information-Centric Networking (ICN). With a robust research portfolio featuring over one hundred peer-reviewed scientific publications indexed in SCOPUS and contributions to global standardization bodies like IEEE and IETF, he also serves as a European Commission expert and is currently the Vice-Chair of the IEEE COMSOC Portugal Chapter.
This session will feature:
1. Expanding Technological Scope of Mobile Communications: Unlike previous generations, 5G marks a paradigm shift, integrating a broad array of complementary technologies. This segment will explore the motivations and emerging requirements driving this convergence, along with use cases from various sectors.
2. Vertical Market Use Cases: Real-world applications of mobile communication mechanisms in verticals such as transportation, energy, and manufacturing will be discussed. The presentation will also delve into pioneering uses of 5G and the transition toward Beyond-5G and 6G environments.
3. Outlook and Opportunities Across Sectors: The flexibility and dynamism enabled by 5G are fostering innovation across numerous industries. Key research and development opportunities will be highlighted, showing how these technologies are reshaping industrial and societal processes.
4. 5GAINER Laboratory Visit: Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the 5GAINER lab, housed at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, University of Aveiro Campus. This facility showcases state-of-the-art mobile communication infrastructure and is a testbed for many of the mechanisms and services discussed during the presentation.
5 - Prototypes involving various technologies, such as: computer vision processing for real-time object classification; 5G network setups and vehicular networks; etc.
The visit will be guided by PhD students David Manuel Ribeiro Santos and Rui Miguel Morais Silva, both conducting research within ATNoG. Their work focuses on enabling advanced communication mechanisms suitable for deployment in vertical sectors, emphasizing network/resource federation and the orchestration of control and data planes.
This event promises to provide an engaging and insightful overview of the current and future landscape of mobile communications, bridging academic research with practical innovation.
