In the week of July 19, 2021, high school students will have the opportunity to assemble their own heart monitor. This activity is organized by Instituto de Telecomunicações and Instituto Superior Técnico, in the framework of Ciência Viva no Laboratório Programme for scientific occupation during summer holidays.
This activity intends to introduce students to biosignals, biomedical instrumentation and telecommunications. It corresponds to 30 hours (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon for 5 days). Mornings are dedicated to group presentations, visits to laboratories and experimental sessions. During the afternoons, the interns will dedicate themselves to assembling biosignal acquisition "kits" and experimenting with biomedical sensors first hand. The trainees will have contact with the techniques of processing and testing printed circuits, soldering the components of the kits, manufacturing some of the components to be used and testing the circuits at the end.
The group presentation program will encompass: introduction to biomedical engineering, systems physiology, signals and systems, fundamentals of biomedical instrumentation, artificial intelligence, network and Internet communications, mobile communications, video coding and analysis, wireless power transfer.
