1. A class on "Ultracold Quantum Gases" aimed at doctoral students, in the context of the course on Quantum Information Technologies of the Doctoral Programme in the Physics and Mathematics of Information), from 10h00 to 12h00.

Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV) services are being trialled while UHD streaming services have already seen their commercial débuts. The amount of data associated with these new services is very high thus extremely efficient video compression tools are required for delivery to the end users. The recently published High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard promises a new level of compression efficiency, up to 50% better than its predecessor, Advanced Video Coding (AVC). The greater efficiency in HEVC is obtained at much greater computational cost compared to AVC. A practical encoder must optimise the choice of coding tools and devise strategies to reduce the complexity without affecting the compression efficiency. Moreover, particular attention in the codec design should be also devoted to features such as parallel processing, limited memory footprint, rate controller and shot change detector modules. This seminar will present the main results of THIRA, a collaborative project funded by Innovate UK which is an executive non-departmental public body which funds, supports and connects innovative businesses to accelerate sustainable economic growth. THIRA targets broacasting of UHDTV content using HEVC with Main profile and level 5.1. The talk will provide an overview on the work done to select an appropriate test material and coding conditions, to design a set of encoder optimisations reducing the encoder complexity and finally the main implementation features of the developed codec will be also discussed.
Speaker bio: Matteo Naccari received the “Laurea” degree in Computer Engineering (2005) and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (2009) from Technical University of Milan, Italy. After earning his Ph.D. he spent more than two years as a Post-doc at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisbon, Portugal affiliated with the Multimedia Signal Processing Group. Since September 2011 he joined BBC R&D as Senior Research Engineer working in the video compression team. His research interests are mainly focused in the video coding area where he works or has worked on video transcoding architectures, error resilient video coding, automatic quality monitoring in video content delivery, subjective assessment of video transmitted through noisy channels, integration of human visual system models in video coding architectures and encoding techniques to deliver Ultra High Definition (UHD) content in broadcasting applications. He also actively participates to the standardisation activities led by the Joint Collaborative Team On Video Coding (JCT-VC) where he has served as co-editor for the specification text of the HEVC Range Extensions (RExt).
