Instituto de Telecomunicações and the Department of Electromechanical Engineering (DEM) of the University of Beira Interior will host a special online seminar on December 11 at 9:00 a.m., featuring Pietro Ferreira from Université Savoie Mont Blanc. The session will last approximately 1h30 to 1h45 and will take place in the DEM meeting classroom, with the speaker joining remotely.
With the talk titled “Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT)”, the speaker will explore the emerging paradigm of Edge AI, focusing on embedded solutions that bring intelligence directly to where data is produced. As IoT evolves into AIoT, devices are no longer passive data collectors; they become smart systems capable of interpreting information, learning from patterns, and making autonomous decisions at the edge. This shift enables lower latency, reduced bandwidth usage, greater reliability, and faster responses across a wide range of applications.
The seminar will highlight the impact of AIoT in areas such as industrial operations, smart cities, healthcare, logistics, and retail, where predictive maintenance, enhanced safety, and personalized user experiences are driving significant transformation.
Bio:
Pietro Ferreira (IEEE S'03-SG'06-M'12-SM'18) holds a B.Eng. cum laude in Electronics and Computer Engineering (2006) and an M.Sc. in Microelectronics (2008) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. He earned his Ph.D. in Communications and Electronics from Télécom Paris (IPP), France, in 2011, followed by an HDR in Physics from Université Paris-Saclay in 2019. His research focuses on high-performance, high-reliability circuits and systems. He has worked at IM2NP (UMR CNRS 7334) and IEMN (UMR CNRS 8520), and from 2014 to 2024 served as Associate Professor at Université Paris-Saclay, CentraleSupélec, GeePs (UMR CNRS 8507). Since 2024, he is Full Professor at Université Savoie Mont-Blanc, CROMA (UMR CNRS 5130). His current work explores design methodologies and microwave instrumentation techniques for ultra-low-power integrated circuits in harsh environments

Have you ever wondered how open source really works? Are you intrigued by licenses and governance models? Or how you can get involved in the open source community? How does it really drive innovation in practice?
In this session, you will get an overview of open source, open source licenses, and how EU projects leverage Open Source in various ways, guided by the expertise of the Eclipse Foundation. You will also see how the Eclipse Foundation facilitates standardization efforts by looking at how the Jakarta EE specifications are developed under the Jakarta EE Working Group hosted at the Eclipse Foundation.
At the end of the session, there will be a direct opportunity to engage with a panel of open source experts and ask any questions you might have.
The event will take place on November 12th, 2025, from 14:00 to 17:00, at Instituto de Telecomunicações (Auditorium), Aveiro, Portugal, with the invited speakers:

André Gomes is a Research Project Manager at the Eclipse Foundation, actively promoting the foundation's strategic research initiatives in Europe since 2024. Holding a Ph.D. in Computer Science (2016) from a joint program between the University of Bern and the University of Coimbra, André provides a solid technical background to his role. With experience spanning both academia and industry, André previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra and as a Project Manager at OneSource, overseeing several research and technical projects. His expertise spans key digital domains, including IoT, Telecommunications, and Cloud Computing. André now focuses on translating cutting-edge research into effective open-source solutions and fostering collaboration among European technology stakeholders.

Ivar Grimstad is the Jakarta EE Developer Advocate at Eclipse Foundation. He is a Norwegian Java Champion and JUG Leader based in Sweden. Besides advocating for the Jakarta EE technologies, Ivar contributes to the Jakarta EE specifications and is the PMC Lead for Eclipse Enterprise for Java (EE4J). He is also one of the specification leads for Jakarta MVC and represents Eclipse Foundation on the JCP Executive Committee. Ivar is also involved in various other open-source projects and communities. He is a frequent speaker at International developer conferences.

Rosaria Rossini is a Senior Research Project Manager with over 10 years of experience in EU research projects and technology innovation. Holding an M.Sc. in Computer Science (2010) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Turin (2015), Rosaria has a strong background in managing large-scale collaborative initiatives at the intersection of academia and industry. Since 2022, Rosaria has been part of the Eclipse Foundation, where she supports strategic research activities, project coordination, and the advancement of open-source ecosystems in Europe. Her expertise spans research management and digital infrastructures, with a focus on building synergies between open-source technologies, industrial stakeholders, universities, and EU policy priorities.
