On July 1st at 3:00 PM, the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Aveiro branch, will host the talk "Blockchain4Fishing" in its auditorium, a cutting-edge session focused on traceability in the fisheries sector through the application of emerging technologies.
How can we ensure that the fish on your plate is truly what the label says?
This talk brings together blockchain, IoT, digital identities, and DNA analysis to revolutionize traceability in the fisheries industry. By combining DNA barcoding with immutable blockchain records, it becomes possible to:
- Scientifically verify the species and origin of fish at any point along the value chain;
- Effectively combat food fraud and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing;
- Automate verification processes through smart contracts;
- Strengthen compliance with European regulations such as the "EUDR";
- Increase consumer trust and market value of certified products.
Prototypes developed with academic and industrial partners will also be showcased, including IoT sensors on fishing vessels and integration with certification and control systems. The talk will conclude with a vision for a digital ecosystem in the blue economy, where technology and science work together toward sustainability and transparency.
Guest Speaker:
Professor and researcher of the Project Blockchain.pt, João Carlos Ferreira has over 30 years of experience in applied digital technologies. He is one of the pioneers in blockchain education in Portugal, having created and taught over 20 blockchain-related courses, including in international programs in Norway, Italy, Nepal, Mozambique, and Uganda. He is also Vice-Chair of IEEE Blockchain Portugal, a member of the IEEE Action for Industry Committee, and an evaluator for European blockchain and AI research projects.

"Ciência Viva no Laboratório" is a summer internship program that allows students from 9th grade to 12th grade (including professional education students) to intern free of charge at some of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the country.
