The IEEE Communications Society Portugal Chapter, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Portugal Chapter, and the Instituto de Telecomunicações are pleased to announce the “GPS Games Portugal Tour 2026”, a two-stop, three-day event bringing hands-on learning in GNSS and amateur radio to Covilhã (University of Beira Interior) and Lisbon (Instituto de Telecomunicações, IST).

Led by internationally experienced speaker Miroslav Skoric, this initiative offers participants a unique opportunity to explore real-world applications of GPS technologies in communication systems.

This session introduces the fundamentals of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) within the amateur radio context, with a focus on APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System).

Participants will experience:

  • Practical demonstrations using low-cost GPS receivers
  • Real device showcase and simulated demos
  • Outdoor experimentation with radio equipment

Event Details:

  • Date: 19 April 2026
  • Time: 10:30 AM - 12:10 PM
  • Location: UBIMEDICAL, Instituto de Telecomunicações, Lab. 1.11, Covilhã
  • Admission: Free

Afternoon Extension (Covilhã)

The learning continues with “Environment Monitoring and Amateur Radio” (12:10 PM - 4:00 PM), exploring how GPS systems integrate with environmental sensors such as temperature, humidity, and telemetry.

Hands-on Workshop (Covilhã)

A follow-up session, “Hands-on Antennas”, will take place at the Faculdade de Engenharia, focusing on practical antenna setup for VHF/UHF and HF communication.

Event Details:

  • Date: 20 April 2026
  • Time: 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM
  • Location: Instituto de Telecomunicações, Departamento de Engenharia Eletromecânica, Faculdade de Engenharia, Room 08.18 (provisional), Covilhã
  • Admission: Free

Lisbon Session (Instituto Superior Técnico)

The tour continues in Lisbon at Instituto Superior Técnico, hosted by Instituto de Telecomunicações.

This session brings the same engaging and practical approach to students in Lisbon, covering:

  • GNSS fundamentals and positioning systems
  • APRS and real-time communication applications
  • Field-based insights and live demonstrations

Event Details:

  • Date: 21 April 2026
  • Time: 05:30 PM - 06:30 PM
  • Location: Instituto de Telecomunicações, Meeting Room 10.26, Torre Norte, IST, Lisbon
  • Admission: Free
