Distinguished Microwave Lecture: High-Efficiency Doherty Power Amplifiers at High Frequencies

on 15-09-2026

...

The Doherty power amplifier remains one of the leading architectures for achieving high efficiency under power back-off. However, extending its operation to the C-, Ku-, and Ka-bands, as well as to mmWave frequencies, introduces significant practical challenges, including reduced device gain, increased parasitic effects, transmission-line losses, and AM/PM distortion arising from load modulation.

In this Distinguished Microwave Lecture, Vittorio Camarchia will explore circuit-level and system-aware approaches for achieving robust Doherty operation at high frequencies. The talk will address key aspects of the design process, including impedance-inverter implementation and loss mitigation, output and load compensation networks, bandwidth-extension techniques, driver and bias considerations, and linearity under wideband modulated signals, with particular attention to EVM, ACPR, and NPR performance.

The lecture will also examine MMIC implementations in GaN and GaAs, highlighting the trade-offs associated with different device technologies, as well as packaging challenges and measurement methodologies. Recent results and practical design guidelines will illustrate how efficiency, bandwidth, and linearity can be balanced to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of modern wireless and satellite communication systems.

Bio:

Vittorio Camarchia is Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. His research focuses on high-efficiency RF and microwave power amplifiers and transmitters for 5G/6G and satellite communications, with particular emphasis on load-modulated architectures, including Doherty and Chireix/LMBA amplifiers, broadband linearization, and GaN/GaAs MMIC design.

Camarchia currently serves as Chair of IEEE MTT-S Technical Committee 23 (Wireless Communications) for 2025–2026 and has been appointed an IEEE MTT-S Distinguished Microwave Lecturer for 2026–2028.
