Physiological Monitoring with Wearable Systems: Challenges and Perspectives

on 07-09-2026

...

Wearable technologies are transforming physiological monitoring, making it possible to continuously assess respiratory, cardiovascular, and biomechanical parameters beyond controlled laboratory environments. Yet, moving from the lab to real-world conditions presents significant challenges, including motion artefacts, environmental variability, unstable sensor–skin interfaces, and fluctuations in data quality across time and individuals.

On 7 September at 13:00, Dr. Carlo Massaroni will present a Seminar at Instituto de Telecomunicações, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), North Tower, 11th Floor, Room 11.26, with the option to participate online via Zoom.

The presentation will explore these challenges through a comprehensive framework covering the entire measurement chain, from sensing materials and wearable architectures to signal processing, multimodal data fusion, and AI-driven assessment of signal quality. Rather than treating artefacts exclusively as a filtering problem, the proposed approach combines sensor and interface design with contextual information, enabling unreliable data to be identified before they compromise physiological estimates.

The seminar will present several case studies, including 3D-printed thermo-hygroscopic sensors, smart garments, and instrumented facemasks, validated across sports, occupational, and everyday-life scenarios. Particular attention will be given to measurement traceability, breath-by-breath and cardiac parameter estimation, signal quality indices for adaptive processing, and haemodynamic analysis using Symmetric Projection Attractor Reconstruction (SPAR) as an alternative to conventional beat-by-beat feature extraction.

The event will provide an opportunity to discuss the current challenges and future perspectives of wearable physiological monitoring, particularly the transition from laboratory-validated technologies to robust solutions capable of operating reliably in real-world settings.
