We are pleased to announce the Summer 2026 OAI Workshop – Open Source in the Times of AI Native Networks, taking place on June 22–23, 2026, in Porto, Portugal.
The event will be hosted by Instituto de Telecomunicações and held at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), in collaboration with the Portuguese SME Allbesmart.
This workshop offers a timely opportunity to reflect on the evolving role of open source in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within cellular wireless networks.
OpenAirInterface (OAI) continues to champion open source as a driver of innovation through collaboration, enabling the flexibility required to support a wide range of users and use cases. As the industry moves toward 6G, OAI contributes by developing reference designs aligned with and supporting ongoing standardization efforts in 3GPP. It also promotes the development of emulation tools for large-scale experimentation, critical at a time when AI-driven 6G systems require extensive data for both training and validation.
This edition of the workshop will explore where open source creates value, and where its limitations may lie.
Bringing together stakeholders from government, academia, and industry, the event will provide a platform to examine these questions and showcase how the community is advancing open, interoperable, and high-performance cellular networks.
The workshop is designed for those actively working with OAI-whether developing features, integrating components, conducting experiments, or deploying solutions, as well as for individuals seeking deeper engagement with the platform. It also welcomes strategic thinkers interested in shaping the future of open source within the 5G and 6G ecosystem.
