The objectives are to:
• Perform a follow-up of the standardization process of LTE-Advanced technologies
• Identification of main interference and co-existence issues.
• This task will then evaluate suitable spectral sensing techniques, detection and evaluation of interference levels between different femtocells, envisaging full frequency reuse, and development of appropriate interference cancellation techniques.
• Deliver a concept description of the identified radio mechanisms to allow the development of femtocells planning algorithms for these mechanisms.
Candidates must hold a Master in Telecommunication and Computer Science Engineering. Furthermore, the candidates should have a solid knowledge in mobile radio systems and SDR techniques.

Research Grant - PEst-OE/EEI/LA0008/2011 (BIC - Bolsa de iniciação científica) on Design of Garment Integrated Energy Harvesting Devices with Cognitive Radio Functionalities
| Summary |
The Instituto de Telecomunicações – Delegação da Covilhã is welcoming applications to a research Grant (BIC - Bolsas de iniciação científica) on Design of Garment Integrated Energy Harvesting Devices with Cognitive Radio Functionalities.
Successful applicants must hold a Licenciatura degree (or three years completed in an international bachelor programme) in Electrical and Computer Engineering (or similar).
One of the bottlenecks of the wireless sensor devices performance is the batteries and energy storage. This research proposal addresses motion, electromagnetic and body heat based energy harvesting techniques for healthcare and body monitoring systems. The comparison of several scavenging strategies and circuit optimization is envisaged having in mind the design of highly efficient DC power generation from diverse sources, based on the characterization of the services, energy harvesting device circuits and the requirements for the WSN monitoring hardware. The design and optimization of the MAC and routing protocols (in the context of cognitive radio) will consider modelling and simulation approaches, complemented by its actual implementation in real nodes for testing and measurement purposes (hardware verification). Hybrid energy storage systems are here of fundamental importance, where energy may be smartly stored in a supercapacitor operating in close cooperation with a rechargeable battery.
New innovative circuits design for power scavenging will be proposed, accounting for the fact that a Radio Frequency (RF) circuit optimized for energy harvesting is not necessarily optimized for communications. Wearable antennas in the context of Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) will be conceived. To accomplish this task, knowledge on electromagnetic properties of textile materials is essential for the design body-centric wireless communication antennas, whilst accounting for the wide range of existing materials and manufacturing techniques.
Ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna design is envisaged, with major objective to achieve higher Electromagnetic radiation collection. For this reason, the main requisites of this antenna are: the highest possible bandwidth, omnidirectional radiation pattern and smallest size. The contributions from the integration of the antennas onto the garments will serve as a feedback loop to the process of dimensioning the scavenge circuit devices, facilitating their improvement and optimization.
The duration of the grant will be 7 months.
|
| Profile |
The successful candidate has sound prerequisites in protocols and hardware issues for wireless sensor networks as well as solid knowledge of English language (spoken and written. Advanced skills on hardware design and testing is definitely an asset to the planned research, as well as strong knowledge on C, C++, nesC and Visual Studio. Preferential selection factors: average mark obtained in courses attended and curriculum vitae adequate for the objectives of the working programme.
Selection of the candidates will be performed by evaluation of the submitted documents (60%), followed by an interview (40%) of the top candidates, taking into consideration their educational performance, professional experience, merit and motivation.

| Summary |

Candidates should preferably have: i) interest in pursuing research in Computational Finance; ii ) working knowledge of the following programming languages: JAVA, C or C++; iii) fluency in English, with good oral and writing skills.
Plano de trabalhos: The proposed work plan addresses the combination of a Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX) technique together with an optimization kernel based on genetic algorithms (GA). The SAX representation is used to describe the financial time series, so that, relevant patterns can be efficiently identified. The evolutionary optimization kernel is here used to identify the most relevant patterns and generate investment rules, and, therefore, compose new and competitive investment strategies. Preliminary results, using real data series from S&P 500, show that the proposed approach outperforms both B&H and other state-of-the-art solutions. The next steps will include: (1) enhancing the innovative approach to reach higher levels of robustness; (2) Include SAX parameters as GA optimization variables, in order to find the optimal ones to represent financial data; and (3) generalization by extend the validation to a broader range of market indexes. Moreover, the expected results will be submitted for publication in renowned scientific journals in the IC design automation area, e.g., IEEE TEC.
