IT in the Steering Board of the European Technology Platform (ETP) for Future Mobile Communications (06-11-2013)
Rui Luis Aguiar, from the University of Aveiro and researcher from IT (coordinator of the Telecommunications and Networking Group, ATNOG), was elected for the Steering Board of the European Technology Platform (ETP) for Future Mobile Communications.
This ETP will be the founder of the 5G-PPP Association, the entity that will coordinate inside Europe the industrial research and development on future communications, with the ambition of sustaining European leadership on mobile communications. This ETP integrates now satellite, wireless and cellular communications. The PPP will also coordinate with the Photonics-PPP for the development of integrated optic-wireless systems.
Most major European companies are member of the ETP, including manufacturers as Nokia, Siements and Ericsson, and operators as Telefonica, France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom. The 5G-PPP Association will have the responsibility to launch, coordinate and assess the future Public Private Partnerships to be created for the development of novel communication systems, with a global budget estimated above 1.000 million euro for the whole duration of the upcoming funding framework (H2020)

The Pre-Construction of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) kicks-off: (16-10-2013)
The 2013 SKA Engineering Meeting was held on October 7-11, 2013 in Manchester (UK) and gathered over 200 participants from academia and industry areas, including the Portuguese representatives.
In November 4, 2013 the SKA Project took another major step towards the start of the construction of the world’s largest radio telescope, with the announcement of the teams who will be responsible for its final design. In total, more than three hundred and fifty scientists and engineers, representing 18 nations and drawn from nearly one hundred institutions, universities and industry have the challenging task to work on the critical detailed design phase which will usher in the most sensitive and powerful telescope ever devised.
The Portuguese Consortium has a strong presence in the SKA, which is the largest project of global science and the most ambitious program of innovation in the world for this decade. Instituto de Telecomunicações contributes in areas such as “Mid-Frequency Aperture Array” (MFAA), “Telescope Manager” (TM)”, “Science Data Processor” (SDP) and “Signal and Data Transport” (SaDT).

BITalino: Biosignals for Everyone (28-08-2013)
Researchers from the Pattern and Image Analysis Group at IT Lisboa, in partnership with a team from PLUX – Wireless Biosignals, S.A., have recently unveiled BITalino, a low-cost toolkit for rapid prototyping and hands-on activities involving multimodal biosignal data. Out-of-the-box, BITalino integrates easy-to-use software & hardware blocks with sensors for Electrocardiography (ECG), Electromyography (EMG), Electrodermal Activity (EDA), Accelerometry (ACC) and Light (LUX). It also includes a purpose-built MCU, Bluetooth and Power management.
The system has a parallel with Arduino, a popular Do-It-Yourself low-cost hardware platform. A relatively unexplored segment within the Arduino community is exactly the biomedical signals component, and it was here that the team saw a different opportunity.
BITalino can be assembled and customized by the user himself. Each individual block can be snapped off and combined to prototype anything; third-party and custom sensor designs can also be connected, given that BITalino is available in three form factors: Board, Plugged and Freestyle. Regardless of the form factor, BITalino enables the simultaneous acquisition of up to 6 analog input channels (4 @ 10-bit & 2 @ 6-bit) and 4 digital input at sampling rates of up to 1000Hz, and it also has 4 digital output channels (1-bit), that can be used for control and synchronization of third-party devices.
BITalino is getting a good news coverage, both at national and international levels, having been already featured in Exame Informática, I, Wired Italy, The Scientist Magazine, MedGadget and Health Tech Weekly, among other important media.
