Overview

A broad list of topics is addressed under this title, covering: - Deterministic, statistic or hybrid models for radiowave propagation characterization for fixed and mobile services; - Assessment of public exposure to electromagnetic radiation in mobile communications; - Fundamental work related to propagation in complex media with possible application for wireless supporting technology.

Radio propagation channel modelling

Work on radio propagation modelling at IT can be grouped into three main streams: - Propagation modelling in fixed-link systems, addressing diverse topics as the sacattering from wind turbine generators and its influence on telecommunication systems (mainly analog TV), or the charaterization of the path attenuation and fading in satellite communications, - Propagation modelling for mobile systems spans trough a comprehensive list of sub-topics which include, among others, propagation in built-up areas, propagation in and into buildings, and propagation through vegetation. - Directional channel models an d MIMO channel models.

EM exposure assessment

Proliferaton of base stations from mobile communication systems has raised a public concern about possible hazards from the exposure to EM radiation. Work has been done at IT not only to monitor and provide public information about EM exposure levels accross the Country, but also to provide objective enginerring criteria for defining clearance zones arround base station instalations.
